As I am in the accumulation phase, i have thought about a twist to this... generally putting more NEW money into stocks whenever the portfolio is below projections for my asset allocation. Otherwise, i place new money at the desired allocation. Hence, if stocks fall below "expected return", i place more in. In other words, if my 80% stock porfolio grows 1% (equity portion), then i know stocks underperformed (even though they increased in value), so i place more in equities
